Between Two Worlds draws inspiration from the Tata Somba houses of northern Benin, traditional homes of the Batammariba people that carry a meaning far beyond their walls.

Built from the earth, these remarkable houses reflect a deep connection between the living, their ancestors, and the spiritual world.

Within their design lies a beautiful understanding of life and death. The lower level holds spaces dedicated to ancestors and spiritual traditions, while the upper level belongs to everyday life, where families gather, prepare food, and continue the traditions passed down to them.

Two worlds within one home. One honouring those who came before, the other embracing those who are here today.

Alongside the houses stand the leopards, animals often associated with power, wisdom, and authority in African artistic traditions. Their strength is balanced by their watchful nature, bringing another meaning to the artwork: the importance of protecting what we hold dear.

Here, the leopards become guardians of heritage, watching over the connection between past and present, life and death. Their presence reflects the strength found in remembering our roots and the responsibility of carrying our traditions forward.

Together, these elements tell a story of life, death, protection, and the lasting bond between generations.

A tribute to the belief that those who came before us are never entirely forgotten. Their memory lives on through the traditions we preserve, the stories we share, and the lives we continue to build.
